There lies no doubt in the fact that the Pure Sunnah is the second of Islaam’s foundations and that the status that it takes in the Religion is at the head of the list after the Book of Allaah; this of course, is based on the consensus of the people of knowledge, and the reality that it is a source of legal authority by itself upon the entire Muslim nation. Whoever rejects, belies, or claims that it is lawful to be turned away from or to suffice oneself with just the Qur’aan, has strayed far away, committed major disbelief, and has become an apostate from Islaam as a consequence of this statement of his. For surely, with this statement and belief, he has belied Allaah and His Messenger, rejected that which Allaah and His Messenger have commanded and ordered with, and thrown away a major foundation of Islaam which Allaah has ordered us to return back to, depended upon and adhere to, all of this along with rejecting, belying and denying the consensus of the people of knowledge.
Furthermore, from the Qur’aanic verses which cite this is the statement of His, the Exalted:
{And obey Allaah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.} [Soorah Ali ‘Imraan (3):132]
Also, the statement of His, the Sublime:
{O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger and those of you who are in authority. And if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger if you truly believe in Allaah and in the Last day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.} [Soorah an-Nisaa’ (4): 59]
He, the Exalted also says:
{Whoever obeys the Messenger, has indeed obeyed Allaah, but whoever turns away, then we have not sent you as a watcher over them.} [Soorah an-Nisaa’ (4): 80]
How can a Muslim possibly obey him [the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)] and return all that the people differ in back to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger if his Sunnah cannot be used as legal proof, or if it has not been protected and guarded [from mistake, distortion and fabrication].
If this statement was true then it means that Allaah has ordered us to return back to something that is nonexistent and this is from the greatest types of falsehood, disbelief in Allaah and bad thought of Him.
He, the Mighty and Majestic, says:
{We have sent down to you the Dhikr that you may explain clearly to men what has been sent down to them, and that they may give thought.} [Soorah an-Nahl (16): 44]
He, the Exalted, also says:
{And We have not sent down the Book to you except that you may explain clearly to them those things in which they differ, and as a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.} [Soorah an-Nahl (16): 64]
So how can Allaah, the Sublime, entrust unto His Messenger (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) the task of clarifying that which has been sent down to him and his Sunnah is nonexistent, or is insufficient to reach the level of legal force?
Also, from those Qur’aanic verses that expound on this is issue is the statement of His, the Exalted:
{Say: “Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and you for that placed on you. If you obey him, you shall be guided. The Messenger’s duty is only to convey in a clear way.} [Soorah an-Noor (24): 54]
He, the Sublime, also says in the very same chapter from the Qur’aan:
{And perform Salaat and give Zakaat and obey the Messenger that you may receive mercy.} [Soorah an-Noor (24): 56]
He, the Exalted, also says:
{Say: “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allaah- to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa. It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allaah and His Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believes in Allaah and His words and follow him so that you may be guided.} [Soorah al-‘Araaf (7): 158]
In these verses is the clear citation that all guidance and mercy lies in following him (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and how can this be possible without acting upon his Sunnah, or according to the false claim that it [the Prophetic Sunnah] is totally un-authentic, or that it is not to be depended upon?!
May Allaah make us all true students, supporters and callers to the Sunnah and may prayers and salutations be extolled upon our Prophet, Muhammad, his family, companions and followers in goodness until the Last Day.
{ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ }
{ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلًا }
{ مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ وَمَنْ تَوَلَّى فَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا }
{ وَأَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ }
{ وَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا لِتُبَيِّنَ لَهُمُ الَّذِي اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ }
{ قُلْ أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ مَا حُمِّلَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ مَا حُمِّلْتُمْ وَإِنْ تُطِيعُوهُ تَهْتَدُوا وَمَا عَلَى الرَّسُولِ إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ }
{ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ }
{ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا الَّذِي لَهُ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ الَّذِي يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَكَلِمَاتِهِ وَاتَّبِعُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ }
