Question: What is Salafiyyah, and who is their leader?
Response: It is an ascription to the Salaf; the Salaf are the companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and those who followed them upon goodness (Tābi’ūn), from the first three virtuous generations, and then those who came after them.
This is Salafiyyah, and ascribing to it means, ascribing to what the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were upon, and ascribing to the way of Ahl al-ḥadīth – those who traverse the Salafi methodology.
Salafiyyah [includes] belief in the names and attributes of Allāh; belief regarding divine decree; belief regarding the Companions etc… So the Salaf believe in Allāh, the exalted and majestic; they believe in his beautiful names and lofty attributes which he described himself with, and his Messenger ﷺ described him with; they believe in them in a way which is befitting his majesty, glorified and most high. They do this without distorting, comparing, resembling negating and figuratively interpreting.
They believe in the divine decree, its good and harm; that the imān of a person is incomplete until he believes in the divine decree, which Allāh has decreed upon his people. Allāh, the exalted and majestic said,
{Indeed, We have created everything, perfectly preordained} [54:49]
As for the Companions, it entails believing that they are the companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ; saying “radiaAllāhu ‘anhu’ when mentioning their names, accepting their trustworthiness and that they are the best of nations and generations; believing each one of them was upright and trustworthy, contrary to what the Shī’ah and Khawārij believe, who consider them to be disbelievers and do not recognise their rights and virtues.
Salafiyyah does not have a leader except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He is the imām of Salafiyyah, and their role model, and the Companions of the Messenger ﷺ are their role models.
The proof and principle [for following the way of the salaf] is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:
The Jews divided into 71 sects, the Christians divided into 72 sects, and this ummah will divide into 73 sects. All of the in the Fire, except one.
They (the Companions) said,
Which one is it, O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ?
He replied.
They are those who are upon what I am upon, and my Companions.
Also, the statement of the Prophet ﷺ in the hadith of ‘Irbād ibn Sāriyah, radiaAllāhu ‘anhu, who described the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ. He admonished them with piety, saying,
I admonish with Taqwa of Allāh; listening and obeying [those in authority over you], even if it be an Abyssinian slave who governs you.
He then ordered them to follow his Sunnah, and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, and said,
Bite onto it with your molar teeth, and beware of innovated matters. Every innovated matter is a bid’ah, and every bid’ah is misguidance.

السؤال : ما هي السلفية ومن زعيمهم؟
الجواب : هي نسبة إلى السلف ، والسلف هم أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم والتابعون لهم بإحسان من أهل القرون الثلاثة المفضلة فمن بعدهم . هذه هي السلفية ، والانتماء إليها معناه هو الانتماء إلى ما كان عليه أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وإلى طريقة أهل الحديث ، وأهل الحديث هم أصحاب المنهج السلفي الذين يسيرون عليه.
فالسلفية عقيدة في أسماء الله وصفاته ، عقيدة في القدر ، عقيدة في الصحابة ، وهكذا فالسلف يؤمنون بالله عز وجل وبأسمائه الحسنى وصفاته العلا التي وصف الله نفسه بها ، ووصفه بها رسوله ﷺ ، يؤمنون بها على الوجه اللائق بجلال الله سبحانه وتعالى من غير تحريف ولا تمثيل ولا تشبيه ولا تعطيل ولا تأويل.
ويؤمنون بالقدر خيره وشره ، وأنه لا يتم إيمان عبد حتى يؤمن بالقدر الذي قدره الله سبحانه وتعالى على عباده ، والله جل وعلى يقول :
{إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ} القمر: 49
أما في الصحابة ، فمعنى ذلك هو الإيمان بأن أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ يجب الترضي عنهم واعتقاد عدالتهم ، وأنهم خير الأمم وخير القرون ، واعتقاد أنهم عدول كلهم بخلاف ما تعتقده الشيعة والخوارج ؛ الذين يكفرون أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ ولا يعرفون لهم حقهم.
وليس للسلفية زعيم إلا رسول الله ﷺ ، فرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هو إمام السلفية وقدوتهم ، وأصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قدوتهم . والأساس في ذلك والأصل فيه؛ قول النبي ﷺ : “فترقت اليهود على إحدى وسبعين فرقة ، وافترقت النصارى على اثنتين وسبعين فرقة ، وستفترق هذه الأمة على ثلاثة وسبعين فرقة ؛ كلها في النار إلا واحدة.” قالوا: “من هي يا رسول الله؟” قال : “هم الذين على مثل ما أنا عليه وأصحابي.“
وقوله ﷺ في حديث العرباض بن سارية رضي الله عنه الذي وصف خطبة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأنه أوصاهم بعد ذلك بتقوى الله فقال : “أوصيكم بتقوى الله والسمع والطاعة وإن تأمر عليكم عبد حبشي.”
ثم أمر باتباع سنته وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديين وقال : “عضوا عليها بالنواجذ وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور فإن كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة.”
