Question: Does an accepted Blessed Hajj wipe away the major sins? and when does trade become permissible during hajj?
Response: Firstly, it is established in the two Saheeh (al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) in the Hadeeth of Abu Hurairah, May Allaah be pleased with him, that he said:
I heard the Messenger of Allaah, May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, say:
«Whoever makes hajj and does not engage in sexual relation, nor any acts of immorality, he will return like the day his mother gave birth to him»
And he, May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, also said:
«From one Umrah to the next Umrah is an atonement for what [sins] occurred between them, and an accepted Blessed Hajj has no reward except Paradise.» – Reported by both al-Bukhaaree and Muslim in their Saheeh.
So Hajj and other deeds are from the righteous actions that wipe away sins, if a slave [of Allaah] performs it according to the way Islam prescribes. However, major sins must have repentance based upon what has been reported by Imaam Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah, May Allaah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, said:
«The five daily prayers, from one Jumu’ah to another Jumu’ah, from one Ramadhaan until the next are an atonement for what happens between them if one reframes from the major sins»
Imaam bin al-Munthir, May Allah have mercy upon him, and a collection of other scholars had the opinion that an accepted Blessed Hajj wipes away all sin based upon the apparent of the above two hadeeth.
Secondly, it is permissible to trade during the month of Hajj. Imaam al-Tabaree in his book of tafseer collected a narration with his chain from ibn Abbaas, May Allaah be pleased with him, where he explained the Verse in the Qur’aan:
{There is no sin on you if you seek the bounty of your Lord}
And he [ibn Abbaas said its meaning was]: “There is no sin upon you to buy and sell before and after one enters the state of Ihraam”
And with Allaah is Tawfeeq, and may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

{ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ }
