Raising hands in congregational supplication for deceased in graveyard

Reference: Fatwa Number 690: http://www.ferkous.com/site/rep/Be11.php

Question: After burying a deceased person, one of the people who is present [in the graveyard] raises his voice in supplication, he raises his hands and faces the Qiblah; the people behind him [also do this] and say ‘Aameen’ during his supplication. What is the ruling regarding this?

May Allaah bless you.

Response: All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds. May peace and salutations be upon the one who was sent by Allaah as a mercy to mankind, his companions and brothers until the Day of Judgement. Thereafter,

The legitimacy of supplicating out aloud for a deceased person after his burial is not known in the pure Sunnah; even if the supplication is done by raising the hands, people saying ‘Aameen’ and facing the Qiblah.

The established Sunnah is that the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) would, upon completion of the burial of a deceased person, stand near him and say,

Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask Allaah to make him firm, indeed he is now being questioned [1]

So a person following the Sunnah should suffice with standing near the grave and supplicating to remain firm; this seeking forgiveness should be done individually. It is permissible for him to repeat his supplication three times, due what is known from the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam), that he would ‘repeat his supplication three times.’ [2]

It is permissible for him to order the people who are present [at the graveyard] to seek forgiveness for the deceased person and ask Allaah to make him firm due to the previous Hadeeth.

A person should not do anything additional to this, nor seek to correct it in any way. This is because Allaah has perfected his religion and will not take away anything from it; He is pleased with it and will never disprove anything from it.

All knowledge is with Allaah (the Most High); our final call is that all praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds. May the salutations of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam), his companions and brothers until the Day of Judgement. May Peace be upon him.
