Reference: al-Hath ‘alaa ijtimaa’ kalimat al-muslimeen
Know, that for goodness and evil there are indicators by which the slave can be known:
The indicator of happiness of mankind is:
- that you see a person desiring goodness for all Muslims,
- [hoping] for their guidance
- sincerely advising them according to his ability of advising in different ways
- moving to conceal their sins and not broadcasting them
Intending by all this: the Face of Allaah and the Final Abode.
The indicator of the misery of a slave is:
- that you see him striving in backbiting people
- slandering them
- following their faults and looking up their secrets.
- If he hears something that is disliked, he broadcasts it and spreads it; he even adds to it commentary from his own self.
Such a slave has the most evil of ranks with Allaah, hated by Him,open to His displeasure; it is feared that Allaah will expose such a person in the worldly life before his Hereafter; This will be so, unless a person accounts for himself by sincere repentance and replacing the evil deeds by good deeds.
It is befitting for a person who values himself and seeks to elevate his rank by ridding himself of this dispraised characteristic. One should ponder over his saying (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam):
Whoever conceals [the sin of a] Muslim, Allaah will conceal his [sin] in the Worldly Life and the Hereafter.
Also, his saying:
O assembly of those who have believed with their tongues, yet Imaan has not entered into the hearts. Do not backbite the Muslims, nor seek out their secrets. For, whoever seeks out the faults of his brother, Allah will seek out his secrets. Whoever has his secrets sought out by Allah, Allah will disgrace him, even [if he hides] in the depths of his house.
للخير والشر علامات

واعلم أن للخير والشر علامات يُعرف بها العبد:
فعلامة سعادة الإنسان: أن تراه قاصدًا للخير لكافة المسلمين حريصًا على هدايتهم ونصيحتهم بما يقدر عليه من أنواع النصح، مؤثرًا لستر عوراتهم وعدم إشاعتها قاصدًا بذلك وجه الله والدار الآخرة.
وعلامة شقاوة العبد: أن تراه يسعى بين الناس بالغيبة والنميمة ويتتبع عثراتهم ويتطلع على عوراتهم، فإذا سمع بشيء صدر منهم من المكروه أشاعه وأذاعه ،بل نشر معه شرحًا من ابتداعه، فهذا العبد بشرِّ المنازل عند الله مقيت عنده متعرض لمساخطه يوشك أن يفضحه في دنياه قبل أُخراه إن لم يتدارك نفسه بالتوبة النصوح وتبديل السيئات بالحسنات.
فحقيقٌ بمن لنفسه عنده قيمة ؛أن يربأ بها عن هذه الخصلة الذميمة، ويتأمل معنى قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ((من ستر مسلمًا ستره الله في الدنيا و الآخرة)).
وقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (يا معشر من آمن بلسانه ولم يدخل الإيمان قلبه لا تؤذوا المسلمين ولا تتبعوا عوراتهم فإنه من يتبع عورة أخيه يتبع الله عورته ومن يتبع الله عورته يفضحه ولو في جوف بيته).
