Question: Some patients visit me after having drunk intoxicants or taken drugs. This then results in them committing certain prohibited acts such as adultery and homosexuality. Should I inform [the authorities] of these patients or not?
Answer: Upon you is sincere advice; advise them and encourage them to repent. Conceal their sins [1] and do not take their affair further nor expose them; rather help them upon obedience to Allaah and His Messenger, and inform them that Allaah (may He be glorified) forgives the one who repents.
Also, warn them from returning to these sins. This is due to the saying of Allaah, may He be glorified:
{The believing men and the believing women are protectors of one another} [9:71] [2]
Also, the saying of Allaah:
{By Time, indeed all of Mankind is in loss. Except those who believe and do righteous deed, encourage each other upon the truth and encourage each other upon patience} [103:1-3]
Also the saying of the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam):
The religion is sincerity [3]
As well as the saying of the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam):
Whoever hides [the sins] of a Muslim, Allaah will hide [his sins] in this world and the Hereafter [4]
Allaah is the One who grants guidance.
Footnotes
[1] The questioner asks regarding a person who he knows, in certainty, has drank alcohol, taken drugs and then as a consequence committed acts of fornication. Despite this, Shaykh Ibn Baz advises that the sins of such a person be concealed. How sad is it, therefore, what we see today from the broadcasting of personal sins upon the internet – sins less severe than fornication or drinking alcohol;
[2] Ibn Katheer explains the verse:
{The believing men and the believing women are protectors of one another}
“They help and support each other. ” As is mentioned in the Saheeh:
The believer to another believer is like a single building, one part of it strengthens the other part.
Also in the Saheeh
The example of the believers in their love and mercy for each other is like a single body. When any limb of it aches the whole body aches because of unrest and fever.
Please refer to the explanation of this verse in Tafseer Ibn Katheer.

{وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ}
وقوله سبحانه:
{وَالْعَصْرِ إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خَسِرَ إِلا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ}
