Question: Is a “duyūth” a man who permits his wife to watch immoral content on TV or video, or allows her to go out dressed immodestly? Or is a “duyūth” a man who is accepting of adultery in his household? When is a man actually given the label “duyūth”?
Response: What is known is that a ” duyūth” is someone who is accepting of “fāḥishah” (lewdness and immorality) in his family, someone who accepts his wife committing adultery or engaging in lewd and indecent acts.
This is a “duyūth”; one is pleased with sin, i.e. corruption within his household; approving of it, or perhaps encourages them to do this, profiting from them [for committing such actions]. We ask Allāh for pardoning and safety.
However, approving of such such sins which enable adultery is a type of “diyāthah”;[1] [similarly] permitting the viewing of nudity of men; listening to [lewd] songs, or [musical] instruments for entertainment that may lead to “diyāthah”, or lead to corruption – this is not the [intended meaning of] “diyāthah”, but it is an avenue to immorality and evil sins.
Question: Does this mean such a person is forbidden from Jannah?
Response: It is narrated in a ḥadīth [2] from the Prophet ﷺ, so yes. We ask Allāh for pardoning.
Footnotes
[1] The linguistic meaning of “diyāthah” is a lack of “ghayrah” (protective jealousy) over one’s family members, such that a person is accepting of immorality, or at the least is not embarrassed by it. It is derived from the verb “dātha” meaning “easy going”. [Refer to: “as-Ṣiḥāḥ by al-Fārābi”; “al-Mu’jam al-Wasīṭ” and “Lisān al-‘Arab” by Ibn Maẓūr]
The meaning of “duyūth” which is mentioned in various aḥādīth is more specific – a person who is accepting of fāḥishah i.e. zinā (adultery). In modern day usage, a literal translation would be “cuckold”. What is less than zinā such as films, lewd music, free mixing can be considered an avenue or pathway towards it.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn was asked whether a person who allows a satellite dish in his house (thereby allowing films, music etc… is called a “duyūth”? He replied: “No, such a person is not called duyūth, because the fāḥishah refers to adultery – we seek refuge in Allāh – that he knows that his wife is committing adultery, and he is accepting of this immoral act.” [Please refer to: https://shamela.ws/book/7678/453]
[2] The Prophet ﷺ said, “Three people Allāh will not look towards on the Day of Resurrection: a person disobedient towards his parents; a woman who imitates men, and a duyūth.” [Collected by an-Nasāī]
In another narration: “Allāh has forbidden from Jannah three types of people: the one addicted to alcohol; the one who is disobedient to their parents and the duyūth…” [Collected by an-Nasāī]
It is also narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “May Allāh curse the duyūth”. [Collected by at-Ṭabarāni]
