Prohibitive Speech During the Day in Ramadhan

Reference: Fataawa Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen – V1, P501

Question: If a person speaks with prohibited speech during Ramadhaan, does this nullify his fast?

Response: If we read the statement of The Most High:

{O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa.}, [Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 183]

…then we will know the wisdom behind the obligation to fast. The wisdom being the attainment of Taqwa (piety) and the worship of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala). And Taqwa is attained by abandoning what is prohibited. Its complete meaning includes doing those actions that we are commanded to do and to abandon and leave the prohibited actions.

Indeed, the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

«Whoever does not abandon falsehood in speech and action, then Allaah has no need for him to leave his food and drink.», [Transmitted by al-Bukhaaree].

Therefore, this is further emphasis for the fasting person to leave and abandon prohibited speech and actions.

So he does not backbite the people. He does not lie. He does not cause dissension or discord between people [by carrying tales] nor does he sell anything that is Haraam. So he stays away from all of the prohibitions.

So if the person does this throughout the whole month of Ramadhaan, then (in shaa.-Allaah) his soul will become upright for the remainder of the year.

However, it is sad to see that many of the people who fast do not make a distinction between when they are fasting and when they are not. Many people are upon a habitual way of engaging in prohibited speech, such as lying, cheating and other than that. Such people do not give fasting its due dignity and respect.

And these prohibited actions do not nullify the fast. However, such actions reduce the reward of fasting and perhaps such actions [if they are done habitually and continuously] might waste the reward of fasting completely. wAllaahul-Musta’aan.
