Brotherhood, not racism

All praise is for Allāh, Lord of creation; may salutations of praise and peace upon the seal of the Prophets and Messengers. Thereafter,

I have been informed of the differing, resentment and hatred which has occurred between some of the brothers in Britain due to ethnic and racial bias.

I remind myself first, as well as my Muslim brothers, who all accept Allāh as their Lord, Islām as their religion, and Muḥammad as their prophet and messenger; I would like to remind them of the great blessing that Allāh has bestowed upon us Muslims, that he has united us upon the word of Tawḥīd and following the seal of the prophets and messengers; that he made us brothers upon his religion.

This has been mentioned in his great Book, as he stated reminding us of his blessing:

{And hold firmly to the rope of Allāh all together and do not become divided. And remember the favour of Allāh upon you – when you were enemies and he brought your hearts together and you became, by his favour, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and he saved you from it. Thus does Allāh make clear to you his signs that you may be guided} [03:103]

Therefore, the obligation upon us all is to know the value of this blessing, to focus on uniting the word and, rejecting all forms of prejudice – ethnic, national, racial or tribal – which only stems from jāhiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance).

If anything occurs between us as brothers, incited by the prejudice of jāhiliyyah, the obligation upon us is to work towards reconciliation; to control one’s tongue, and to refrain from reacting to abuse with further abuse.

Otherwise, the result is only further intolerance and hatred; it results in corruption and harm, whose extent is only known by Allāh; it opens doors for those who have malice and oppose [the Da’wah] to provoke further discord and strife between Muslims, and to distort their reputation in the media.

So we must pardon and forgive; we must implement the command of the Prophet ﷺ who said,

Leave it, because it is malicious.

He said this when discord and anger occurred between the Muhājirūn (the migrants from Mecca) and Anṣār (the original residents of Madinah) from amongst his companions.

One of the Anṣār said: “…for the sake and honour of the Anṣār “. So one of the Muhājirūn replied: “…for the sake and honour of the Muhājirūn”

Then the Prophet said,

Why this calling of jāhiliyyah ? Leave it, because it is malicious. [1]

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

Verily, Allāh has removed from you this pride of jāhiliyyah and boasting regarding ancestors. A person is either a pious believer or a miserable sinner. You are all sons of Ādam, and Ādam came from clay. Let the people stop boasting about their ancestors. They are merely fuel in Jahannam; or they will certainly be more worthless with Allāh than the beetle which rolls dung with its nose. [2]

The sermon of the Messenger of Allāh in his final pilgrimage was:

O people, verily your Lord is one, and your forefather was one. Alas, there is no virtue for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab. There is no superiority for a white person person over a black person, nor a black person over a white person – except by taqwa (peity). [3]

This ḥadīth illustrates the meaning of the saying of Allāh,

{O mankind, we have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāhis the one who has taqwa (piety). Verily, Allah is all-knowing, all-aware} [49:13]

I ask Allāh, the most-high, to make me and you from his pious worshippers, whose basis for judgements and actions is taqwa and seeking the pleasure of Allāh as the basis for their judgements and actions.

Verily, he is the hears and answers supplications; for him is all praise in the beginning and end.

{يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ}
