Atheism: Causes, Dangers & Strategies – 1

In the name of Allāh, ar-Raḥmān (the most merciful), ar-Raḥīm (the bestower of mercy).

This is the first part of a series of articles regarding Atheism. The articles are an edited translation of the following book, authored by our Shaykh Salih Ibn AbdulAziz as-Sindhi, entitled:

الإِلْحَـــاد: أَسبَابُهُ ومَخَاطِرُهُ وسُبُلُ مُوَاجَهَتِهِ

“Atheism: Causes, Dangers, and Strategies to Counter It”

For clarity and readability, I adopted an “edited translation” approach, which is a loose translation and often includes slight adaptations to the wording. Readers may notice that some sentences have been added or others summarised, but the intended meaning has been preserved.

The Arabic book can be accessed here.

Chapter One: Introduction

All praise is for Allāh who sent his Messenger with guidance and the true religion to give it ascendancy over all other doctrines, even if the disbelievers detest it.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh; He is alone and has no partners. I attest to his exclusive right to worship. I also bear witness that Muḥammad is his worshipper, messenger and the best of creation. May Allāh send salutations of praise and peace upon him, his family and companions.

Thereafter:

Intellectual and religious proofs, as well as a person’s natural disposition and physical senses, all bear witness that our Lord, the blessed and most high, is alone and unique in his Rubūbiyyah;[1] and has the exclusive right to Ulūhiyyah.[2]

It is his kingdom which is magnificent; his majesty which is exalted; and his status which is elevated. It is his command which is fulfilled, and it is his beauty which is perfect.

He ascended above his ‘Arsh (Throne); He controls the affairs of his creation; He is al-Malik (the sovereign) and al-Haqq (the truth). He is self-sufficient, and all creation is dependent upon Him; He is rich and glorified above all others, and everybody else is poor and needy in front of him.

{Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks him; every day he is bringing about a matter} [55:29]

He, the most-high, forgives sins; he removes anxieties; he eases difficulties; he aids the weak; cures the broken, and enriches the poor. He gives death and life; he brings happiness and takes it away. He guides whoever he wills and allows others to be misguided. He bestows his favours on some people and takes them away from others; He honours people and humiliates others; he elevates people and lowers others; His hand keeps giving without any decrease in his kingdom. He remains generous and bountiful throughout the day and night.

He is the first before whom there is none other; He is the eternal after whom there is none other; He is the elevated above whom there is none other; He is the closest, closer than whom there is none other. There is no deity worthy of worship except him, al-‘Azīz (the magnificent), and al-Ḥakīm (the all-wise).

He does not have a door whereby permission to enter must be sought; He does not have a screen whereby one must enter behind it; He does not have a minister that one must approach first; He does not have a helper that one must seek aid from; He does not have a guardian; He does not require one to intercede on behalf of others – except the one who he permits to intercede, and honours by accepting his intercession; He does not have a deputy who informs him of the needs of creation.

He encompasses everything through his knowledge, ability and mercy; no situation preoccupies him; no issue perplexes him; and repeated requests do not tire him. If all of creation – the first to the last, jinn and humans – congregated on a single plain, every one of them asking for their needs to be fulfilled, and he gave every one of them what they requested – it would not decrease his kingdom in the slightest.

Glorified be He, how great, perfect and magnificent he is; when he wants something to occur, he only says: “Be”, and it is. His veil is light; if it were uncovered, the radiance of his face would burn creation. He is Allāh, the Lord of creation, yet how far removed are those who transgress due to their arrogance, and reject him due to their stubbornness.

Footnotes

[1] Rubūbiyyah relates to the unique actions of Allāh in that only he creates, sustains and controls creation. He gives life and takes it, and he will resurrect after death once more.

[2] Ulūhiyyah relates to the exclusive right of Allāh to all worship.
