Abu Umayah al Jumhee narrated that the messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم said: “Indeed, three things are from the signs of the hour: One of them is that knowledge is taken from the Asaaghir.” Nu’aaym (one who is in the chain of narration of this hadeeth who narrated by way of Ibn Mubaarak) said: “Ibn Mubaarak was asked: Who are the Asaaghir?” He answered: “Those who speak with there opinions, but as for a Sagheer [young person] who narrates upon a kabeer [elder person], then this is not what is meant by “Asaaghir”.” Abu ‘Ubaid explained this statement of Ibn Mubaarak by saying that Ibn Mubaarak was of the opinion that the Asaaghir were the people of innovations and not those who are young in age. He (Abu ‘Ubaid) said: “This is one opinion, and my opinion is that the meaning of Asaaghir is when knowledge is taken from those who came after the companions of the messenger of Allaah, those are the ones who took knowledge from the Asaaghir. Ibn ‘Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allaahصلى الله عليه و سلم said “Barakah (blessing) is with your Akaabir.” ‘Umar ibn al-Khataab used to say: “Indeed the most truthful of speech is the speech of Allaah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of the messenger of Allaah, and the most evil of affairs are the innovated ones, indeed the people will continue to be upon good so long as their knowledge comes from their Akaabir.” And he said: “Surely I know when the people will be upon good and when they will be corrupted: If fiqh comes from the Sagheer, the kabeer will defy him, but if fiqh comes from the kabeer then the Sagheer will follow him, and both will be guided.” ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood said “The people will continue to be upon good so long as they take knowledge from their Akaabir, but if they take it from their Asaaghir they will be destroyed.” And he said: “You will continue to be upon good as long as knowledge is with your Akaabir, and if knowledge is with your Asaahgir, the Sagheer will belittle the kabeer.” And he said: “The people will continue to be upon good as long as their knowledge comes from the companions of the messenger of Allaah and from their Akaabir, but if their knowledge comes from their Asaaghir, then that is when they are destroyed.” Abu ‘Umar (Yusuf ibn ‘abd al Bar) said: “The explanation of “Al Asaaghir” by Abu ‘Ubaid and Ibn Mubaarak has preceded in this chapter as you have seen, and some of the people of knowledge said that what is meant by the “Sagheer” mentioned in the Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar and others like it is the one who is asked questions (fataawa), while he has no knowledge, and indeed the kabeer is the scholar in everything.” ... continued in part 2
[1] literally means: Elders and Youngsters.
